‘Tis the Season of Giving: Food Security

With the holiday season upon us, it’s important to give thanks and think about how we can give back.

The holiday season often fosters a greater sense of giving, and we as a firm believe it is important to do so. This month we want to highlight some organizations and initiatives that we contribute to. We want to dedicate our second post to an organization that we volunteered with earlier this week: Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Atlanta Community Food Bank

Mission: “To fight hunger by engaging, educating and empowering our community.”

A member of Feeding America, the Atlanta Community Food Bank works with more than 700 community partners to distribute food to residents in 29 across metro Atlanta and north Georgia who are food insecure. As defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food insecurity is a “lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods.”

On average, the Atlanta Community Food Bank delivers 9.7 million pounds of food per month, which equates to approximately 8 million meals. Between its over 150 staff members and 1,700 monthly volunteers, food and other items are collected from donors, reviewed, organized, and sorted for their community partners to pick up or receive by delivery. Donors range from wholesalers and retailers to restaurants, farmers, and individuals. Community partners include food pantries, community kitchens, childcare centers, night shelters, and senior centers.

KB Advisory Group volunteered at their main facility in East Point to sort and organize donations. In conjunction with the other volunteer groups, we collectively processed 17,309 pounds of food which equated to 14,424 individual meals!
