‘Tis the Season of Giving: Affordable Housing

With the holiday season upon us, it’s important to give thanks and think about how we can give back.

The holiday season often fosters a greater sense of giving, and we as a firm believe it is important to do so. This month we want to highlight some organizations and initiatives that we contribute to. Our first post is dedicated to two organizations that focus on affordable and accessible housing: Mercy Housing and Neighbor In Need.

Mercy Housing

Mission: “To create stable, vibrant, and healthy communities by developing, financing, and operating affordable, program-enriched housing for families, seniors, and people with special needs who lack the economic resources to access quality, safe housing opportunities.”

Mercy Housing is a nonprofit with a national network that has been working to address affordable housing needs for over 40 years. Their efforts include renovating existing homes and developing new affordable rental units.

Their Southeast headquarters is here in Atlanta and covers Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Within this region, they have been able to provide permanent affordable homes for over 5,600 families. Since 1996, they have been able to develop or preserve 45 standalone affordable properties and construct almost 3,200 affordable rental units. Their accolades for their work include: The Magnolia Award, The National Trust for Historic Preservation Award, and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Development Excellence Award.

KB Advisory Group makes an annual donation to their southeast office every December.

Neighbor In Need

Mission: “To help low income elderly living in the East Lake, Kirkwood, and Edgewood communities make emergency home repairs.”

Neighbor In Need is a nonprofit whose work assists elderly living in the East Lake, Kirkwood, and Edgewood neighborhoods to stay in place.

Over almost two decades, they have assisted these homeowners with home repairs that would have otherwise impaired them or their home. Examples include heating and cooling, plumbing, electrical, flooring, etc. They have also strived to provide resources to these homeowners so that they can properly protect their homes and other assets. This has included an annual event connecting seniors with local estate planning lawyers. Being entirely run by volunteers, all the money donated to them goes to the individuals they serve. They have been awarded a Hometown Hero by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award.

KB Advisory Group makes monthly donations.
